Courage to Confront the Lies
Suzanne Eller

Today’s Truth
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord, (Romans 8:38-39 NIV).

Friend to Friend
When she was younger, she and her siblings clung to each other hoping that one day it would get better. Later she married a man, believing it to be her best escape plan. He made a promise to love and cherish her but didn’t follow through. As a single mom, she raised her babies, working hard to ensure their childhood was better than hers.

She’s my friend and one of the strongest women I know. One day we were sitting around my kitchen table. Our conversation led to the topic of love, something we talked about often. It was a confusing topic to her because love wasn’t lived out very well in front of her.

That day we read Romans 8 together, and I listened as she read a portion more than once.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

Tears brimmed as she whispered, “I’m worth loving because God loves me this much.”

Have you ever had a moment when the truth is suddenly clear? It’s been obscure, murky, just out of reach. You’ve tried to figure it out on your own, perhaps for years. That’s how my friend felt until the message in Romans 8 leaped from the pages and settled into her spiritual DNA.

Truth overpowered a lie she had believed for far too long.

As my friend read this scripture one more time, she laughed richly. She laughed because she was God’s daughter. She laughed because this truth, inspired by the Holy Spirit, was setting her free. She laughed because a weight she had carried for a long time was falling from her heart.

When any lie that the enemy poses as truth is exposed, something beautiful takes place inside of us. It allows us to see ourselves differently. It gives less power to a past event or a past hurt as we reframe it to include hope for today. We are unleashed from the chains of a broken person’s words because God’s words are greater.

That truth becomes a weapon against an enemy whose goal is to mire God’s daughters in toothless lies.

Is there a lie that has felt like the truth? Has that lie shaped your view of yourself or your worth?

Let’s expose that lie today. Ask the Holy Spirit to shine a light on it.

If that lie is that you are not worthy of love, let’s replace it with this truth: There is nothing that can stand in the way of God’s unconditional, never-ending, vast love for you.

As we step into truth and others, it allows us to look at murky messages and clouded assumptions that have made themselves at home in our hearts, giving us the courage to confront them with the help of the Holy Spirit.

As we do, one brave act leads to another, and we are set free one truth at a time.

Let’s Pray
God, draw me toward truth and thus freedom. Open my heart and mind to the truth found in Your Word. May truth serve as a spiritual weapon in my life and combat any lie that wants to hold me tight.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn
John 16:13 reminds us that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth. Read this verse out loud. Insert your name into the verse.

Ask God to strip any lies of their power over your heart and thoughts.
