Recognizing the spiritual realities around you
September 17
So the other disciples told (Thomas), “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
Senses are funny things if you really think about it. You and I spend our whole lives seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling the world around us. And the combined information we gather from those senses gives us our experience of the world. When it comes down to it, every sense we have is just a way to gather information.
For example, a rose smells the way it does because the chemicals it releases interact with receptor cells which in turn send the information we call “smell” to our brain. A rainbow looks the way it does because its light waves are received through the lens of the eye and are projected onto the retina, which sends signals through the optic nerve and tells our brain what we’re seeing.
Now, the same is true in a much greater sense when it comes to spiritual realities. There are spiritual realities beyond smell and beyond sight that can only be comprehended by faith. And God has given every one of us an incredible capacity and that capacity is the ability to believe things unobservable by any of the five physical senses.
The average person, like Thomas in today’s passage, lives by the idea that seeing is believing. But faith takes you to a higher level which says, “believing is seeing.” So when it comes to spiritual realities, remember that in order to see, you must first truly believe!
FAITH IS THE SENSE YOU MUST HAVE TO SEE SPIRITUAL REALITIES. SO BELIEVE IN CHRIST WITH YOUR HEART AND YOU’LL SEE MORE THAN YOU EVER COULD WITH YOUR PHYSICAL EYES.
